Abstract:Sandra Cisneros is a contemporary American poet, who became famous at the age of 30 for her book The House on Mango Street. The author’s identity as a new immigrant author and her spatial experience across national borders has given her works unique spatial features. Esperanza, the heroine of the novel The House on Mango Street, observed her surroundings with keen eyes and narrated the lives of the people on Mango Street in a child’s tone. She was eager to escape her narrow, crowded living space and have her own life, expressing her eager pursuit of creative space.
This paper will combine space theory to analyze the space narrative and space writing in the novel from the three perspectives of physical space, social space and psychological space, reveal the influence of space on female consciousness and female identity, experience the cultural connotations of writer’s spatial psychology, and explore the space appeal expressed in the works. The paper will interpret the physical space that embodies social ideology and identity, analyze the social space of cross-ethnic groups, cross-cultural and inter-lingual boundaries in Mango Street, and further analyze the psychological space pursued by the protagonist Esperanza, so as to reveal the connection between female identity and space, and express the desire of women to construct an ideal social space.
