Abstract:Moment in Peking is one of the most well-known novels of Lin Yutang, who introduced the Chinese culture and value system to the Western society and enjoyed international prestige during the 20th century. Written in English, the novel tells the story of the three great families in Beijing, the Yaos, the Zengs and the News from the year 1901 to the 1930s. The whole novel shows the changing historical features of modern Chinese society.
In the novel, there are many female characters. Generally speaking, the women characters fall into two groups: traditional female characters and non-traditional female characters. This paper tends to analyze the female characters in Moment in Peking. Through the portrayal of two distinctly different groups of female characters, Lin Yutang expressed his contradictory attitudes towards women. His unique attitudes resulted from his special growth and educational environment. It is hoped that this thesis can provide a new perspective to understand the novel and the author.
