ABSTRACT
The research has analyzed and summarized useful strategies and techniques of literary translation from Pearl S. Buck’s translation of Shui Hu Chuan and experience that can be learned from Pearl S. Buck’s cross-culture transmission. Based on the systematic comparison and analysis of specific examples in her version, her translation styles can be summarized into literal translation mixed with free translation, foreignization, and the weakening of expletives and sexual discrimination in addresses. As regards translation styles, causes are analyzed from her social background, religious belief, cultural outlook, literature view, thinking habit and translating procedure. Finally, it is concluded that, learning from Pearl S. Buck’s experience, according to different translation materials, requirements and other factors, translators can apply different translation theories, adopt different translation strategies, choose foreignization, domestication or literal translation and other translation methods, thus, forming their own translation styles.
