This unit is one of the Go for it! series. It’s available for students in the second semester of grade 7. The topic of this unit is “animals in a zoo”, introducing common animals and endangered animals to students. The purpose of this unit is to enable students to ask and answer questions about animals they like or dislike and explain their reasons with each other by using some sentence patterns like why questions. Furthermore, students are expected to introduce their favourite animals from some perspectives else such as animals’ habitat and features in their own words. In Section A, students can learn some description words to describe animals and express their preferences. They ought to have a good command of description words of animals and sentence patterns in order that they can describe animals vividly and explain their reasons for their preferences for animals accurately. In “Grammar Focus”, students can acquire the usages of why and where questions and their answers. Students are supposed to do some practice after acquiring the new grammatical rules in order to grasp the grammatical knowledge. Section B provides students with a series of activities describing animals to develop students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Surveys on endangered animals lead to the reading part which is about the endangered elephants. After reading the article, students should achieve the results of cultivating the awareness of protecting animals. And the production of the writing part should be passages whose title is “My Favourite Animal”. Students can put what they have learned in this class into use. Students tend to be interested in the topic of this unit—animals, so they may have more passion for learning and achieve great results.
