This unit is the first unit of the English textbook for Grade 7 published by People’s Education Press. The language goal is to talk about abilities, which is a common topic of conversation.
There are many new words and phrases about abilities in this lesson, but they are not so difficult for students to grasp. They can be memorized easily by repeated practice.

There is no doubt that junior school is a key period for students to learn English. They have been learning English in primary school and are exposed to much new knowledge every day. On this condition, it is of great significance for teachers to pay attention to the connection between what students learned in the past and what they are going to learn.
There are also many problems which should be taken into consideration in English teaching for junior school students.
At present, the important parts for students in English learning are always reciting the words and memorizing sentences. As a result, junior school students, especially students in Grade 7, always lack systematic knowledge of grammar.
For a very long time, listening ability and speaking ability have not been taken seriously enough in most primary schools and junior schools, but they have been and will be really important in English learning. And these two abilities are not isolated but linked with each other. For example, if student doesn’t know how to pronounce a word correctly, then it would be possible that he can’t recognize it while listening.
Due to different key points in exams, English reading is always ignored to some extent. Therefore, junior school students are always not so good at reading, which is a condition that teachers must take into consideration in teaching process.
In addition, the imbalance of English education resources among many regions also leads to different English proficiency of students. Therefore, teachers should try their best to help the students who are not so good at English. Under the same teaching condition, students are individuals who are totally different from each other, which asks teachers to be able to analyze practically. Facing different problems of different students, teachers should take corresponding measures to promote students’ development.
