Abstract:With the deep penetration of China’s reform and opening-up policy, China’s tourism industry is playing more and more significant role in our economy. Suzhou, as one of the favorite tourist cities in China, has been appealing to hundreds and thousands of tourists domestic and international. Suzhou classical gardens which represent the achievements in gardening art and technology of China have become not only the gem of our country but also the gem of the world. Thus, how to translate those cultural messages to foreign visitors with absolutely different cultural backgrounds is an important point in the translation of Suzhou garden introduction.
This thesis makes a discussion on translation methods of Suzhou garden introduction from the perspective of skopos theory. On the basis of analyzing language features of tourist attraction introduction, the thesis explores the feasibility of applying skopos theory to the translation of garden introduction with abundant examples and proposes four suitable translation methods: annotation plus transliteration, amplification, omission, and restructuring.
