Abstract:Lucy Maud Montgomery is a world-renowned Canadian woman writer who specializes in novel writing. Her representative work Anne of Green Gables is a long bildungsroman for boys and girls to read, known as “the sweetest girlhood story in the world” and is a classic novel that touches thousands of good hearts, which is enlightening to people. From the perspective of postcolonialism, the thesis will analyze Anne of Green Gables and discuss Anne’s self-consciousness and belonging and her pursuit of identity in the British colony.
The thesis is mainly divided into four parts. In Chapter One, introduction of the author as well as her works is given, and the summary of the research status of novel by scholars at home and abroad is made. Chapter Two is the theoretical foundation, which focuses on the analysis of the definition, features and development of postcolonialism. Chapter Three is the main part of the thesis. It analyzes why Anne is confused about cultural identity and focuses on the process of seeking and constructing the identity.
