Abstract: Walt Whitman, the father of American modern poetry, is a famous poet and humanist, and the first one to eulogize democratic idea freely and bravely. Due to the profound influence from democrat Thomas Paine and Emerson, he has a strong sense of democratic tendency and Utopian socialism. Leaves of Grass, the collection of his lifetime, is a splendid milestone in the American history as well, which contains not only elegant words but also various themes. Democratic idea is soul of Leaves of Grass. Therefore, this paper probes into the democratic idea in Leaves of Grass on anti-slavery, poetry contents and writing styles in order to get a profound knowledge about the democratic idea in Leaves of Grass.
