Abstract
In recent years, a large number of American sitcoms have been introduced into China. With vivid plots and humorous dialogues, these sitcoms have become popular among millions of Chinese audiences. Humorous language plays an important role in sitcoms, and whether the audiences can understand the connotation of humor is the key for the success of sitcoms. Humor language refers to a kind of artistic approach which can create a harmonious atmosphere, resolve contradictions and conflicts, as well as narrow the distance between people.
Different from the traditional theory, Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory emphasizes that translation cannot merely focus on the form equivalence or linguistic equivalence, but should pay attention to whether the target receptor’s response is equivalent to the original reader’s response. Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, this thesis tries to explore the strategies and methods of E-C humor translation based on the examples of humorous language in American sitcom Everyone Loves Raymond. And the purpose of this study is to provide some help for humor translation in the future.
