Abstract
With the rapid development of globalization, more and more works of English children’s literature have been introduced to China, which makes the E-C translation and study quite necessary. Children’s literature is written by adult writers for children, and the composition always put children in the first place. Because of children’s limited cognitive level and narrow life experience, children’s literature is plain in language and vivid in expression. Any translation behavior has clear purposes. Skopos Theory regards translation as a purposeful activity and puts emphasis on the purposes of target texts. Therefore, it can be a guiding theory to children’s literature.
The thesis studies the E-C translation of children’s literature from the perspective of Skopos Theory. First, it states the development of Skopos Theory abroad and Chinese scholars’ studies on it, and then the status quo of the study on E-C translation of children’s literature is summarized as well. Then based on the summary of linguistic features of children’s literature and guided by Skopos Theory, the thesis explores the E-C translation of children’s literature from four aspects: diction, syntax, rhetoric and cultural elements. It takes the two Chinese versions by Yang Jingyuan and Ren Rongrong of English novelist James Barrie’s Peter Pan as the study case. The thesis points out that the E-C translation of children’s literature should be target-readers -oriented. The translator should choose simple but vivid words and short sentences. What’s more, figurative rhetoric and expressions in accordance with culture of the target language are used.
