ABSTRACT
Stephen Crane (1971-1900) is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism, Impressionism and Heroism. Based on his mature literary genre, the thesis focuses on his unique angel on the issue of heroism in The Red Badge of Courage, aiming at reveal the author’s concerns about ordinary people’s struggle to be a hero through mental growth from the traditional Homeric heroism.
