ABSTRACT
Modeling is one of the most important language learning methods and it has been widely applied to the teaching of writing. Recently, the studies on the application of modeling in translation teaching have yielded desirable results. However, little research has been conducted on the use of modeling in interpretation teaching. The development and popularization of the Internet makes it possible and easy for students and teachers to collect a large number of parallel interpreting texts or materials for imitation, sharing and discussion, which offers a prerequisite for applying modeling to interpretation teaching. Based on Bandura’s social learning theory and Julia’s theory of Intertextuality and by adopting an empirical approach, this present study investigates the feasibility and methods of applying modeling to interpretation teaching and comes up with procedure of modeling in teaching. A case study is conducted to compare effects of traditional teaching and modeling teaching. The students from modeling teaching perform much better than those from traditional teaching in interpretation test in their options of native words and phrases and sentence structure. Also students feel more confident through modeling teaching, which can correspondingly improve their acquisition. Therefore, modeling in interpretation teaching is practicable and works quite desirably in enhancing students’ interpreting proficiency and performances.-
