Abstract: Chinese classical poetry possesses the feature of simplification and implication. Furthermore, it has rhythmic beauty and formal beauty. In Chinese classical poetry, image plays an indispensable role in assisting poets express their inner feelings and aspirations. Facing such a literary treasure, many translators want to translate it into English and make it a common wealth of mankind. However, due to the complexity of Chinese, the features of Chinese classical poetry and fuzziness of image, it’s hard to deliver the original meaning of the poet and keep the form of the poetry at the same time. This thesis will set the Three Beauty principle of Professor Xu as a governing standard and explore the image translation methods of classical Chinese poetry. After the brief introduction and exposition of the image, the classification of image and the definition of Three Beauty principle, the author will analyze several translations of Fishing in Snow and Autumn Thoughts in order to make a cooperation and pick out the most proper version of image translation method. By using the Three Beauty principle for reference, in the author’s opinion, while translating Chinese poetries, the image connotation is superior to its original structure. What’s more, in order to accomplish an excellent work, the translator should have proficient writing foundation and rich cultural deposits.
