Abstract:English is a compulsory course in primary education. Learning English has become an essential part for primary school students. What knowledge they have learned and what education they have gained from English will in some degree influence their cognition and emotion in their future life. And teachers are one of the most important factors of education, especially during the transition from the traditional education to the quality education. A teacher plays an indispensable role in a student’s whole education life. As in Primary school education. English teachers are especially important. English teachers enlighten the students of their second language study, showing the students the customs, culture and conditions of English-speaking countries. Teachers should know the rules and features of the students’ mental activities so as to guide and educate the students correctly. So as for a primary school teacher, to know clearly how to teach the students well and what roles he should play in the primary English class are of great importance. He should change his roles according to the students’ mental changes. For instance, to be a teacher, a friend or an example of the students. This thesis aims to discuss the teacher’s roles in the English classroom under the new situation in the primary school. It is hoped that the research will give the primary school English teachers some advice of what roles they should play in the English classroom.
