Abstract: Nowadays in China, English, as a tool, has been used more often. It is confused for English learners that how to use native English to express themselves and communicate with others, because more or less they may express themselves in the way of Chinese which probably will lead to broken English,or even worse may cause misunderstanding. With the influence of mother tongue, learners will transfer their habits of speaking Chinese into English learning. Under this circumstance, more and more experts are down to the research of the transfer of mother tongue in second language acquisition.
This essay starts from the brief introduction of the theory of language transfer and the pronunciation transfer in the second language acquisition. It discusses some problems of the theory of language transfer through some examples. Then, based on the concept of segmental phoneme and suprasegmental phoneme, it illustrates the influence of the transfer of Chinese pronunciation in English pronunciation. Next, the essay introduces some characteristics of Sichuan dialects’ pronunciation and illustrates its influence in English pronunciation by some examples in the aspect of segmental phoneme and suprasegmental phoneme. By analyzing the characteristics of Sichuan dialects, it concludes some points, which are easy mispronounced. Mostly, it focuses on the negative transfer of Sichuan dialects.
By writing this essay, the author hopes readers can better understand the transfer of dialects in English pronunciation learning through the analysis and examples in this article. The article proves the importance of language transfer in English learning as in second language acquisition. Meanwhile, it can have some positive influence on English learners by concrete analysis of the transfer of dialects, especially for Sichuan local people to speak English more smoothly and communicate with English-spoken people more fluently.
